Americans have growing faith in state and local government
There's good news and then there's REALLY good news: The latest Gallup poll says "Public trust in state and local government has reached a more than 10-year high." This on the heels of a NACo "Commissioners" survey over the summer that found increasing optimism that economic conditions in their home counties are improving.

The McClatchy Co. Wednesday said it lost $2.1 million in the first quarter as advertising revenue continued to decline. The results were about the same as the first quarter last year. Washington Post / AP Revenue fell 5 percent to $288.3 million from $303.7 million. Advertising revenue fell 7 percent to $209.8 million from $225.1 million. Digital advertising revenue grew 3 percent and accounted for about 22 percent of total ad revenue, the company said. Poynter / MediaWire McClatchy's 9.2 percent decline in print advertising revenue is a bit worse than other large newspaper chains' recent earnings reports. The New York Times Company reported first quarter earnings that beat expectations; nonetheless, print advertising revenues were down 7.2 percent across its properties. Media General posted a net loss of 23 percent in its first quarter earnings with print advertising down 8.4 percent. Gannett, too, had a poor first quarter, with earnings down 24 percent and an 8.3 percent drop in print advertising.

County sets open house for county government month
As part of its observance of National County Government Month (NCGM) in April, the Edgecombe County, N.C. Board of Commissioners will be holding an open house so that the public can become more familiar with the services available to them through county government.
“We are very proud of the essential services and programs our county provides each day and especially the people who deliver them,” board chairman Leonard Wiggins told The Daily Southerner, Edgecombe County’s hometown newspaper since 1826.

Poster Contest for 4th Graders
The Maplewood (N.J.) Patch reports: For the seventh year in a row, Essex County, N.J. Clerk Christopher J. Durkin is inviting fourth-graders to create a poster about the county for the annual "My Essex County" poster contest.
The winning entries will be displayed at the Hall of Records during the month of May and will be put into a county-wide calendar. In the past, Durkin has received 1,000 entries from 60 different schools for the contest
“When students express themselves through art in the ‘My Essex County’ poster contest they become more aware of our history and beauty that surrounds us and in turn become more invested in our future,” Durkin said.
